Battle of Fromelles
On 19 July 1916, the both Frank and Pat became embroiled in their first major battle on the Western Front, less than a month after they arrived in France.
The battle of Fromelles was a disaster for the Australians. Attacking in the first wave, they suffered heavy casualties at the hands of German machine-gunners, and its advance faltered far short of its objective.
Both brothers were a member of the 59th Battalion a part of the 5th Australian Division.
During this battle Pat was reported Missing in Action and would be later declared Killed in Action. Frank was wounded and hospitalized being shot through the left forearm.
